Wood Pallets

When coming up with design concepts for vegetable gardens, wood pallets are among the most adaptable building materials. These pallets work well as a platform to mount rows of pot plant rings and hooks when used vertically. 

Window boxes

These can be mounted on wooden pallets (see above), walls, deck railings, or balconies. They can also be hung from one another using sturdy cording, ropes, or chains. 

Double duty trellis

The trellis is an essential component of any design for a vertical food garden. Trellises can be purchased from a store or made from supplies including fence, chicken wire, and wood.

Hanging (indoor/outdoor)

You can create "plant hammocks" and various hanging planter holders with a little string and a few Boy Scout knots. As it doesn't require ground soil and only relies on a wall or ceiling, this is a fantastic indoor and outdoor option.

Gutter garden

Hats out to the individual who realised that their home's gutters would make a wonderful place for a vegetable garden. Since they can be cut to size, using aluminium or vinyl guttering is a fantastic way to personalise your vertical garden. 

Vertical straw bale garden

Several veggies grow beautifully on straw bales, which also offer excellent drainage. Another major benefit of growing crops in hay bales is that it's far less expensive than constructing raised garden beds. 

Multi-Tiered container garden

Because you can implement this concept using existing flower beds and pots, it's a perfect starting point for vertical gardens. Put the biggest containers on the ground, then stack the smaller ones on top of them.

Ladder

Make a vertical vegetable garden out of an old wooden ladders which has been retired out of its original intent. Add hooks, shelves, or hanging baskets to each rung and lean the ladder against a wall or fence. 

Herb Spirals

Herb spirals are ornamental raised beds that are formed like elevated spirals. Even though herbs are the usual inclusion, you can also add vegetables and flowers.
